Recovering after a cesarean

A cesarean section is a major operation. Recovery takes time.

Here are some things you might expect as you recover from a cesarean section, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

  • Mild cramping, especially if you are breastfeeding your baby. It will take a few weeks for your abdomen to heal completely.
  • Pain and soreness in the incision area. Your doctor can give you medication that can help relieve the pain.
  • Bleeding or discharge for about four to six weeks.

If you develop a fever or if the pain gets worse, call your doctor. These symptoms could be signs of an infection.

Remember, you are not only on the mend from labor and delivery—you are also recovering from a major operation.
