Would you recognize an opioid overdose?

Most fatal drug overdoses in the U.S. involve opioids, a drug class that includes prescription and illegal drugs like oxycodone, fentanyl and heroin. Recognizing these overdose signs can help save a life.

Opioid overdose: Watch for these warning signs

  • The person has small, constricted pupils—like pinpoints.
  • The person is unresponsive or won't wake up.
  • Their breathing slows or stops.
  • The person vomits or makes gurgling sounds.
  • The person's body goes limp.
  • Their skin is pale, blue or cold.

If you suspect an overdose, call 911 right away. Give the person naloxone (an opioid overdose reversal drug), if available. Turn them on their side to prevent choking, and stay until help arrives.
