Three tips for choosing the right health insurance
Choosing the right health insurance is a very personal decision. There is no “one size fits all.” With the period for open enrollment upon us, it is important to get the best information you can before making your decision. Here are three tips to help get you started.
- Determine if the doctors you see are considered “in-network.” Many health plans will not cover the cost of “out-of-network” care except for emergency care.
- Consider that a low premium may not be a bargain. High-Deductible Health Plans have lower premiums, but may require you to pay as much as $6,650 for single coverage or $13,300 for family coverage before insurance pays 100% of the bill. If you have been diagnosed with a chronic condition, this can have an impact on whether you may want to pay a higher premium to cover more of your costs.
- Investigate “Health Savings Accounts” and “Flexible Spending Arrangements” in which money can be put aside for qualified medical expenses. The funds contributed to these accounts are not subject to federal income tax at the time of deposit.
For help making your decision, White Plains Hospital has developed ”Choosing a Health Plan,” which is posted online
