FIVE STORIES OF THE COVID-19 CRISIS
“Thank you. I couldn’t have done it without you.” This is what one of the earliest patients to conquer COVID-19 said to Jennifer Bello, NP, Senior Director of Nursing, Critical Care Department, on his way out the door. To her, these words are now symbolic of the immense culture of teamwork that emerged at White Plains Hospital during the fight against coronavirus.
“No one ever said, ‘No, I can’t do that.’ It was a difficult thing to go through, but being able to have the support from everyone in the organization made it easier,” says Bello, now in her 18th year as a nurse at WPH. “I always knew White Plains Hospital was a team and that we worked well together, but this crisis really helped solidify what I’ve always known. I was blown out of the water by how well it all worked.”
As a member of nursing administration, Bello works alongside Dr. John Cardasis, Director of Critical Care, who oversees care of the Hospital’s sickest patients. During COVID, it was not unusual to see Bello back
in her scrubs working seven days a week, nights and weekends. She was not alone, as 15% of the registered nursing staff was deployed to different areas of the Hospital during the crisis.
Bello played an important role in helping the clinical teams ramp up for the oncoming crisis, educating her staff on what to expect, ensuring there were adequate supplies of equipment and PPE, and setting up other necessary support systems. She was involved in the herculean effort of coordinating with engineering on the expansion of the ICU from 16 beds to 82, including converting the ambulatory surgery and endoscopy units. She also assisted in the onboarding of staff to make sure those additional critical patients were cared for.
“Jenn’s leadership was essential for the ICU to meet the myriad of challenges that COVID-19 brought,” notes Dr. Cardasis. “The ICU nurses, under her direction, were integral to the management of our COVID-19
