Direct to You™
Laboratory tests that you order yourself. No prescription or appointment is necessary.
How Direct to You™ self-ordered lab testing works
With some of the most commonly ordered medical tests available to you, you can monitor your own health, on your own schedule. Direct to You™ offers laboratory tests that you order yourself, at your convenience. No appointment or prescription from a physician is necessary, as long as you are 18 years of age or older.
To have a test done, simply come to White Plains Hospital’s Admitting Department, Monday – Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM, or Saturday from 8 AM till noon. Ask for a Direct to You™ order form.
Choose the tests from the available list and show photo ID, or two other types of identification. Complete the form and then pay for the tests with cash, check or credit card.
A laboratory professional will draw a small blood sample or provide you with a specimen container and collection instructions. In most cases, you can get your test results in just a few hours. Your results can be picked up between 7 AM and 6 PM, Monday-Friday, or Saturday from 8 AM until noon or you can chose to have them mailed directly to your home.
* Glucose (Blood Sugar) - $20.00
The glucose test tells what the blood glucose level was at the time your blood was drawn. The fasting glucose level, collected after an 8 - 10 hour fast, is used to diagnose diabetes and a pre-diabetes condition. Normal fasting glucose levels range from 74 to 106 mg/dl.
Urine Analysis (Urinary tract infection) - $15.00
This test is used to indicate an infection in the urinary tract.
Pregnancy (urine) - $25.00
This is a test that detects the presence of human Gonadatropic Hormone (hCG) in the urine. The urine pregnancy test is not as sensitive a test for pregnancy as the pregnancy blood test described next.
Pregnancy (blood) - $25.00
This test measures the amount of human Gonadatropic Hormone (hCG.) If the test is positive, it indicates pregnancy. It is a more sensitive indicator than the urine test described above.
Male Infertility (sperm count) - $35.00
A sperm count helps to assess a man’s fertility. Sperm concentration is reported in millions of sperm per ml. Counts greater than, or equal to, 20 million per ml. are considered normal. Semen specimens are accepted from Mon. - Fri. from 8 AM to 2 PM.
Blood Type - $15.00
This test determines your blood type. Your blood type is identified as one of four common blood groups: A, B, AB, or O. Testing also identifies the Rh factor which is reported as Rh negative, or Rh positive.
Hepatitis C (HCV) - $45.00
This test is useful in detecting past or current hepatitis C infections.
* Cholesterol Screening (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL) - $20.00
This test determines cholesterol levels. A cholesterol level below 200 mg/dl is considered desirable and reflects a low risk of heart disease. A test result between 200 to 240 is considered borderline high, and it reflects a moderate risk of heart disease. A cholesterol level above 240 is considered an indicator of high risk of heart disease.
Triglyceride testing is also used to assess the risk of developing heart disease. For diabetics, triglycerides increase significantly when blood sugar is out of normal range. A normal level for fasting triglycerides is less than 150. When triglycerides are very high, over 1000 mg/dl, for example there is a risk of developing pancreatitis.
HDL if often referred to as "good cholesterol." A high HDL level is better than a low HDL level. If HDL is 20% of the total cholesterol level, the risk of heart disease is average. If it more than 20%, the risk of heart disease is less than average. A desirable level of HDL is greater than 60 ml/dl and is associated with a less than average risk of heart disease.
Urine Drug Screen - $50.00
This test screens for the presence of drugs of abuse such as cocaine, marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, barbiturates, PCP and benzodiazepines.
Colon Cancer Screen (Hemoccult) - $20.00
This test is used as a screening for the detection of colon cancer. A positive test result may indicate blood in the stool. Dietary restrictions are recommended prior to testing. Call 681-1232 for information.
* Fasting is recommended for Glucose and Cholesterol Screening.
Lab tests provide useful information, but they are not a substitute for a full medical exam. Results within the reference (normal) range do not ensure good health. Results outside the reference range may not indicate illness. White Plains Hospital’s Laboratory recommends that you consult your physician to discuss your test results as part of a complete medical exam.
