Knee Arthroscopy

At White Plains Hospital Center, our experienced board-certified surgeons are skilled at a wide range of surgeries and procedures. At our Westchester Orthopaedic Institute, our specialized orthopaedic surgeons perform bone and joint procedures. One procedure called a knee arthroscopy is often done to repair injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Knee arthroscopy helps restore normal or almost normal stability to the knee, limits loss of function, and prevents injury or degeneration to other parts of the knee.

During knee arthroscopic surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions-usually two or three- around the knee. The surgeon inserts an arthroscope into one of the incisions.  Instruments and a light source are inserted into the knee through the other incisions. During ACL surgery, the surgeon may repair other injured parts of the knee as well, such as ligaments, cartilage, or broken bones.

Arthroscopic surgery is often done on an outpatient basis, and usually requires no overnight hospitalization unlike open surgery. Patients who have knee arthroscopy often have quicker recovery times than those who have open surgery, however physical rehabilitation after knee arthroscopy may still take several months to a year. The length of time until you can return to normal activities or sports is different for every person, and may range from 4 to 6 months.

At White Plains Hospital Center, our team of surgeons, nurses, and physical therapists are there to help you every step of the way, from surgery to rehabilitation.
