White Plains Hospital Center's Radiology Department offers traditional CT, or CAT, scans, as well as the newer 64-slice CT scan. With these high-tech devices, our board-certified radiologists deliver quality care in one of the busiest Radiology Departments in Westchester County.
 
What is a CT scan?
 
A CT- short for Computed Axial Tomography- is a diagnostic test that combines the use of X-rays with computer technology. CT scans work by sending a series of X-ray beams from various angles to create cross-sectional images of the body. A CT scan can be used to study all parts of the body, such as the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or an arm or leg. To aid physicians in their diagnoses, CT scans take pictures of specific organs including the liver, pancreas, intestines, kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, lungs and heart. They can also be used to study blood vessels, bones, and the spinal cord.

During a traditional CT test, the scanner sends X-rays through the part of the body being studied. Each rotation of the device takes less than a second and provides a picture of a thin slice of the area or organ. These images are then assembled by a computer into a three-dimensional picture that can display organs, bones, and tissues in great detail.

The 64-Slice CT Scanner

The state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner works twice as fast as conventional scanners and provides physicians and their patients with highly detailed three-dimensional images. It stands out as a useful tool in detecting narrowed coronary arteries and diagnosing stroke. White Plains Hospital Center was the first community hospital in Westchester County to acquire a 64-slice CT scanner, a testament to the importance we place on having cutting-edge technology at our hospital.
