What Does My Diagnosis Mean?

Our thoracic team is trained to address a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Achalasia – a condition affecting the ability of the esophagus to transport food to the stomach
  • Bronchogenic cysts – cysts of the bronchial tree that can cause compression, infection, and other complications
  • Carcinoid tumors – slow-growing tumors which can secrete hormones
  • Diaphragm paralysis – in ability of your diaphragm to move properly during respiration
  • Emphysema – a progressive disease that damages the lungs’ air sacs, restricting breathing
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Esophageal diverticulum
  • Esophageal stricture
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – a disease in which the stomach’s contents flow upward into the esophagus
  • Hiatal and paraesophageal hernias – protrusion of the stomach and other abdominal contents into the chest cavity
  • Hyperhidrosis – a malfunction of the body’s internal thermostat, resulting in excessive perspiration
  • Lung nodules
  • Lung cancer
  • Metastatic disease to the lung
  • Mediastinal tumors – Benign or cancerous growths within the central chest cavity
  • Myasthenia gravis – an immune system disorder causing problems including difficulty swallowing and speaking
  • Malignant pleural effusion – abnormal levels of liquid in the lungs’ lining, often as a result of cancer
  • Pneumothorax – air present between the lungs and chest wall, resulting in breathing difficulties and lung collapse
  • Sequestration – a malformation resulting in partial failure of a mass of lung tissue
  • Trapped lung – compression of normal lung tissue by scar tissue
  • Thymoma – cancer of the thymus gland
