Obesity remains a significant national health issue, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that 66 percent of all U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Morbid obesity is closely correlated with a number of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and diabetes, among others. Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight-loss surgery, can be a tool to assist patients who struggle with weight and health problems, especially when other weight-loss methods have been unsuccessful.

White Plains Hospital offers two major types of bariatric surgery -- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Adjustable Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (lap band) surgery.

Bariatric surgery is a life-enhancing surgical procedure that can also involve risks, like any other surgical procedure. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery are advised to follow a structured diet, exercise and lifestyle change plan in order to maximize the benefits of this surgery. Medical, nutritional and emotional health and wellness are essential areas of focus for the patients and those who care for them. Ongoing support groups are highly recommended as an integral part of any patient’s aftercare program and are offered biweekly.
