The Seizure Diagnostic Center at White Plains Hospital consists of a team of dedicated practitioners who are committed to providing expert comprehensive care to patients with epilepsy. It is the only Level 4 Specialized Epilepsy Center in the area as rated by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
The Level 4 designation is applied to hospitals and medical centers that provide the more complex forms of intensive neuro-diagnostics monitoring, as well extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial treatment, according to the NAEC. Level 4 centers also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy. In the Seizure Diagnostic Center at White Plains Hospital, a team of experienced healthcare professionals utilize state-of-the-art technology to provide the basis for accurate assessments of various seizure disorders and advanced treatment options.
Our team is comprised of neurologists specializing in epilepsy, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, nurse clinicians, pharmacologists, psychiatrists, educational counselors, social workers and technologists. We evaluate each patient and confer with his or her personal physician regarding treatment options. Several hundred patients receive treatment each year at our Center.
Who is Referred to the Center?
A patient is usually referred to the Seizure Diagnostic Center by his or her physician for one of the following reasons:
- The diagnosis of epilepsy is unclear.
- A diagnosis of epilepsy has been given, but the type of epilepsy has not been definitively established.
- The use of medication as a treatment option has not been successful.

Our digital Video-EEG monitoring system - the simultaneous taping of the patient's behaviors and recording of brain activity - is one of the most sophisticated systems in the United States.
Treatment options for epilepsy include:
- Medications for seizures
- Ketogenic Diet
- Vagus Nerve Stimulator
- Epilepsy Surgery
Education, social and psychological counseling form an important part of our Epilepsy Program, and the program stresses that the patient discuss not only medical problems with the staff, but non-medical problems as well.
Members of the team work closely with the regional chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Patients may also elect to attend the Epilepsy Support Group.
