Ask someone who has been treated in a hospital how his or her experience was, and they will likely recall an interaction with a nurse. For the 700 nurses at White Plains Hospital, going above and beyond for their patients isn’t something they do occasionally: it’s simply what we do. In recognition of their excellence, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) once again awarded the prestigious Magnet® Hospital designation to White Plains Hospital in November, 2016, this time with two exemplars indicating the Hospital’s worthiness of being emulated by other organizations on the Magnet journey. The Hospital, having first received Magnet designation in 2012, is among an elite group of only 7% of hospitals in the US and 25 hospitals in New York State to have it.
Magnet recognition is the most pres- tigious international designation a
healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence. Healthcare organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy review process demanding widespread participation from leader- ship and staff. The path to Magnet status requires extensive written doc- umentation to demonstrate qualitative and quantitative evidence related to patient care and outcomes, as well as completion of a comprehensive on- site visit by ANCC Magnet surveyors. For White Plains Hospital, every detail of this journey was managed expertly by Magnet Program Director Margaret Brock, RN, and the three-day survey took place in September, 2016.
A key component of the Magnet model is professional growth. Toward that goal, Hospital nurses stay up-to-date on their  eld by reading the medical literature, conducting and publishing research, and attending and presenting at national
conferences. Nurses accompany doctors on daily patient rounds and participate in meetings with social workers, admin- istrators, physicians, and physical and occupational therapists.
Our nurses are encouraged to go back to school to earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The Institute of Medicine set a goal for 80% of nurses to have at least a bachelor’s degree by the year 2020; at White Plains Hospital, that number is already 90%.
The Magnet distinction celebrates the teamwork of nearly every department in the organization. It is a re-af rmation of the Hospital’s culture of outstanding patient care.
