White Plains, NY (January 18, 2013) – Known throughout the New York metropolitan region as a highly skilled surgeon with unique laparoscopic abilities, Dr. Herbert Gretz, Director of Gynecologic Oncology and Gynecologic Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at White Plains Hospital, was recently awarded the Best Abstract on Gynecologic Oncology at the 41st Annual AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopist) Conference in Las Vegas. Dr. Linus T. Chuang, MD, also of White Plains Hospital, and other physicians co-authored the study.

This award recognizes the best work and most innovative research in the challenging area of gynecologic oncology.

Dr. Gretz’s abstract, titled "Survival and Operative Outcome Analysis of Robotic Assisted Versus Laparoscopic Surgical Staging for Endometrial Cancer," features the clinical outcomes and survival analysis of laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies in the treatment of endometrial cancer patients. Much of the information Dr. Gretz included in the study was collected from patients who were treated at White Plains Hospital.

"At White Plains Hospital, it is our goal to get our patients healthy and get them home," said Dr. Gretz. "Our studies show that although operating time is longer with robotic surgery, blood loss is less and hospital stays are shorter. These results are comparable to many other previously published reports and highlight the excellent care available at White Plains Hospital."

Recently named as one of US News & World Report’s 2012 Best Hospitals, White Plains Hospital was specifically recognized for its high performing excellence in two areas, one being gynecology. The Hospital is one of the region’s leaders in providing state of the art treatment to gynecologic patients with benign and malignant conditions.

Dr. Gretz was named one of Westchester’s Top Doctors in 2012. He has been the director of the AAGL fellowship training program at Mount Sinai since 2011. Fellows in training rotate at White Plains Hospital and learn the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques while caring for patients.

"Training new physicians in both robotic and laparoscopic surgical hysterectomy techniques is critical," continued Dr. Gretz. "We want to create future generations of talented and skilled surgeons."
