Surgeon Rafik El Sabrout, MD, PhD, FACS, FRCS(G), successfully performed a laparoscopic removal of a liver tumor at White Plains Hospital on April 16th as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This marks the first time a surgeon has removed this type of tumor using a fully laparoscopic procedure at White Plains Hospital. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a thin tube to make small, precise incisions.

White Plains Radiology Associates, PC has signed an agreement to be in full and exclusive alignment with White Plains Hospital as of April 1st. Approximately 60 board-certified radiologists, technicians and other staff are part of the group, which offers advanced imaging services to Westchester County residents under the direction of Drs. Paul Khoury and Andre Khoury. The group, in operation since the mid 1980’s, will now be known as White Plains Hospital Radiology and will continue to provide a wide range of imaging services, including CT scans, PET scans, ultrasounds, x-rays, mammograms and MRIs.

With construction and iron workers from A.P. Today, eight months after agreeing to a mutually beneficial partnership, Montefiore Health System and White Plains Hospital announced that their agreement has been approved by the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council. Final approval by the State Health Commissioner is expected before the end of October, and once the partnership agreement is filed with the Secretary of State, the transaction will be complete.

White Plains Hospital staged several emergency drills this week in tandem with the City of White Plains Fire and Police Departments and to ensure optimal preparedness in the event of a mass casualty event or explosion. The drills and training exercises were held in a now vacant building adjacent to the hospital at 71 East Post Rd. They involved several members of the White Plains Fire Department assisting in the search and rescue response to simulated explosions where mannequins staged as victims were taken urgently to the hospital’s Emergency Department to be triaged by the ED and Surgical Services staff.

The particular procedure Dr. Gretz performed was a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy using a single, small incision with the da Vinci® surgical system.

In order to accommodate major renovations of the White Plains Hospital lobby and entranceway set to begin in September, the hospital Gift Shop will be closing its current location on August 30th. The shop will operate out of a temporary, location to be determined within the hospital until the renovations are complete.

Leigh Anne McMahon, R.N. of Somers, a seasoned hospital executive with nearly 30 years of experience in nursing, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services at White Plains Hospital. McMahon began her nursing career in 1984 as a graduate nurse in the hospital’s telemetry unit and advanced her career to assume several administrative positions, most recently as Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer. She will retain her Chief Nursing Officer title and expand her responsibilities in her new position to oversee all aspects of patient care services. Over the years, McMahon has led the hospital in securing enhanced measures around patient safety and quality, and was a guiding force in the hospital’s achievement in attaining Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in April, 2012.
